New Taipei City Has an “Angel’s Secret Spot” – Just a 5-Minute Hike Away!

After just a five-minute walk along a mountain trail, you’ll arrive at Dream Lake, known as the “angel’s secret spot.” Surrounded by mountains and shrouded in mist, Dream Lake seems to freeze time, making visitors forget the hours as they relax here. For those looking to get some exercise while enjoying the view of the mountains below, you can continue on the Xinshan Trail. The view from the summit is breathtaking, featuring cliffs and massive sandstone walls that make for stunning photos.

Taiwan also has such a romantic and dreamy attraction—Xinshan Dream Lake in Xizhi District, New Taipei City, is actually made up of two sites: the Xinshan Trail and Dream Lake. Dream Lake, at an elevation of 325 meters, is also known as the “angel’s secret spot,” and can be reached in just a five-minute walk along the trail.

It’s called “Dream Lake” because in winter afternoons, mist often rises over the lake, creating a dreamlike, fairy-tale atmosphere. Originally private land, the owner generously opened the scenic area to the public free of charge and even runs a “Dream Lake Café” by the lake, so visitors can enjoy not only the beautiful views but also a relaxing cup of coffee.

There’s a wooden boardwalk over Dream Lake, which offers picture-perfect views and has attracted many couples to take wedding photos here. There are also swings hanging from the trees by the lake, plus pink heart installations and a small bridge, creating a lovely atmosphere. Even just sitting by the lake can result in postcard-worthy photos, making it a popular photo spot.

The clear lake reflects the lush mountain forests and is also home to rare aquatic plants like water celery and the endemic Taiwanese spotted betta fish. Most visitors enjoy a coffee by the lake and admire the emerald waters, while a few continue up the Xinshan Trail. The path isn’t easy, and it’s not recommended to go after 3 PM. At the summit, you’re greeted by sweeping mountain views at about 499 meters above sea level. Many people like to sit on the protruding large rock slabs to take photos, feeling a great sense of achievement for conquering such rugged terrain.
