Many people visit Seattle just to see the world’s longest floating bridge. It’s not only an engineering marvel but also a hot topic among locals.

According to atlasobscura.com, spanning Lake Washington, this highway in Seattle named State Route 520 is 40 meters longer than the old bridge and is also the world’s longest floating bridge. It officially replaced the old one in 2016.

The bridge is 2,300 meters long. Unlike regular bridges, because the lakebed of Lake Washington is too soft to support bridge piers, this “floating bridge” was designed to overcome such geographic challenges by literally floating on the water.

The new bridge can withstand stronger winds and waves, and will also have tracks for light rail, bus-only lanes in both directions, as well as access for bicycles and pedestrians.
