A once-in-a-lifetime encounter: Tainan’s 321 Alley “Little Southern Night Market” opens for a limited time

Tainan’s night markets are famous throughout Taiwan. In addition to the Garden, Wusheng, and Dadong night markets, there are many others offering a wide variety of delicious foods that add to the lively atmosphere of the city at night. However, there is one night market located in the artsy “321 Alley Art Village.” Unlike the usual noisy and crowded night markets, this “Little Southern Night Market” not only offers a quiet escape in the midst of the city’s hustle and bustle but is also unique for being a limited-time event—so if you miss it, who knows when it will come again?

The “Little Southern Night Market,” located in the 321 Alley Art Village, occasionally “pops up” in Tainan and has gained popularity for its uniqueness and fun. Wan Wu Qi Shi, one of the vendors, shared that the Little Southern Night Market originally came about because the Cultural Affairs Bureau held the “321 Mini Theater Festival” in the art village last year. During the performances, they wanted to offer audiences something to do during intermissions and a way to learn more about the art village. Thus, they invited the resident units to set up stalls and host a small night market, which eventually took shape.

The “Little Southern Night Market” is formed by the resident units of the 321 Alley Art Village and is held in conjunction with the overall events of the park. Since last year, it has been held four times, attracting many visitors during each event. The night market has a nostalgic style with local flavors, mainly selling snacks and handmade items. Some vendors even designed their carts with an old-fashioned theme, and these vintage-style carts have become a special sight in the night market.

In addition to the Little Southern Night Market, the “321 Alley Art Village” also holds various art and cultural events from time to time. Wan Wu Qi Shi likens the operation of the art village to that of a village. Currently, the art village has seven resident units, and every season, two of the units take turns acting as “village heads” responsible for organizing quarterly events. It’s a rather unique rotating system.
