Man runs marathon at -36°C.
Completing a marathon is nothing unusual, but finishing one in temperatures as low as -36°C is truly a remarkable feat. Yesterday, according to Russian media reports, a Russian man named Boris Fyodorov did just that.
Oymyakon is regarded as one of the coldest regions on the planet, having recorded a temperature as low as -90°F (about -67.8°C) in 1933. On New Year’s Eve 2014, native Siberian Boris Fyodorov set off from his home in the Siberian village of Oymyakon to embark on what’s been dubbed the “coldest marathon.” Running the marathon solo, Fyodorov completed his first marathon under extreme cold conditions in just over five hours, thereby breaking the previous low-temperature record set at the North Pole Marathon.
Regarding his next goal, Fyodorov hopes to run a marathon in even colder weather. He stated: “When the temperature drops to -50°C or -60°C, I hope to organize another ‘Oymyakon Marathon.’”
Regarding cold-weather marathons, experts have cautioned ice and snow marathon enthusiasts to be cautious — running a marathon in extreme cold requires professionalism, and should not be undertaken lightly.
