Gradated eaves that seem to stretch from heaven to earth – Laos’ “Wat Xieng Thong” is breathtakingly beautiful

Luang Prabang, where you can experience the complete traditional culture and architecture of Laos, has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among its most iconic attractions is“Wat Xieng Thong”, with its eaves that almost reach the floor and golden decorative motifs, making it a must-visit for wedding photography and tourism in Luang Prabang.

Local guide Hui Ge explains that Wat Xieng Thong is 456 years old and is currently the most intact and ancient temple remaining in Laos, thus holding the highest status among the country’s temple architectures, with significant historical and architectural value. Hui Ge explains that the temple was built in 1560 under the order of the then king, but shortly after its completion, the capital was moved to Vientiane. It is the last building left from the time when Luang Prabang served as the capital. Moreover, apart from Wat Xieng Thong, no other related structures from Luang Prabang’s time as the capital can be found today, giving it special commemorative significance.

Thanks to its well-preserved state and the fact that many of the craftsmanship techniques used are no longer available, Wat Xieng Thong has become a reference point for modern Lao architecture, drawing many visitors specifically to admire its unique construction methods.

What makes Wat Xieng Thong worth seeing isn’t just its exterior architecture. At the back of the temple, the wall is covered with mosaic glass paintings that form the “Tree of Life,” making it a favorite backdrop for many travelers. Hui Ge explains that the Tree of Life holds various interpretations—some say it depicts the realms of heaven and earth—but its true meaning remains unknown, leaving it up to each traveler to interpret.
