King of Thailand passes away; nationwide mourning declared, popular attractions may close for 30 days

The Thai royal family announced this evening (13th) that King Bhumibol Adulyadej has passed away at the age of 89. Earlier, crowds gathered in front of the hospital to pray for the king, and upon hearing the news, they broke down in tears in grief. The Thai Prime Minister's Office also issued a statement announcing the start of national mourning from tomorrow. Travelers planning to visit Thailand may be affected.

King Bhumibol held an extraordinary place in the hearts of the Thai people and was revered as the Father of the Nation. For 70 years, he was widely beloved. December 5th, the king’s birthday, was also celebrated as Father’s Day in Thailand, with the entire nation taking a holiday to mark the occasion. Now, with the news of his passing, not only have TV news channels turned their screens black in mourning, but during the period of national mourning, all government and school buildings will fly their flags at half-mast, and civil servants will wear black as a sign of mourning. Furthermore, all entertainment venues must temporarily close for 30 days.
