Attention for travelers to Thailand: Nationwide mourning for the late King, some businesses may close for 30 days

King Bhumibol Adulyadej (His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej) passed away on October 13, 2016, leading to 30 days of national mourning in Thailand.Tourism Authority of Thailandreminds travelers to be aware that during the national mourning period, it is recommended to wear somber-colored clothing out of respect. Traditional festival events, celebrations, and the operating status of some businesses may also be slightly adjusted. Travelers should inquire with the relevant event organizers before attending.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand stated on its official Facebook page that while travelers are welcome to visit Thailand, it is currently a period of national mourning. It is advised that travelers pay attention to the fact that for the 30 days starting from October 14, it is recommended to wear somber clothing to show respect. In addition, the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew will be closed until October 20 due to the King’s funeral ceremonies, and Bangkok’s Lumpinee Boxing Stadium and Rajadamnern Stadium will also be closed for 30 days starting from October 14. Traditional festivals and celebrations will also be slightly adjusted. Travelers planning to attend such events are advised to confirm details with the relevant authorities in advance.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand added that department stores, shops, restaurants, massage parlors, and tourist attractions across the country will remain open as usual. However, the government recommends that entertainment venues in Thailand temporarily suspend operations. As a result, some businesses may not operate during the national mourning period. Travelers are advised to confirm business information in advance before visiting.
