Loy Krathong Festival Canceled: 13 Thai Events Postponed or Cancelled – At a Glance of Attractions' Status

Following the passing of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Thailand has entered a national mourning period. Thousands of mourners have gathered at Bangkok’s Grand Palace to attend royal religious ceremonies in tribute to the beloved "Father of the Nation." According to the latest announcements from the Bureau of the Royal Household and the Royal Thai Government, some festivals and events have been canceled or postponed during this mourning period.

Overview of Attraction Opening Status:

* Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew: Closed from October 14–20, 2016

* Bangkok Erawan Shrine Market: Closed, further notice pending

* Wat Pho: Open as usual

* Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn): Open as usual

* National Museum Bangkok: Open as usual (Opening hours: 9:00 AM–4:00 PM)

* Rajadamnern Stadium: Temporarily closed, awaiting further notice

* Lumpinee Boxing Stadium: Closed for one month starting October 2016

* Pattaya Ladyboy Shows: Operating as usual (Shows at 5:00 PM, 6:30 PM, 8:00 PM, and 9:30 PM daily, but the final show before the end of October 2016 has been canceled)

* Tiffany’s Show Pattaya: Operating as usual (Daily shows at 6:00 PM, 7:30 PM, and 9:00 PM)

* Siam Niramit: Operating as usual (Showtimes from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM)

* Phuket Simon Cabaret: Operating as usual (Showtimes from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM)

* Calypso Cabaret Riverfront Show: Operating as usual (Alcohol not permitted)

* Chiang Mai Walking Street (Sat/Sun) & Chiang Mai Night Bazaar: Operating as usual (5:00 PM–11:00 PM)

Currently, aside from the Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew which remain closed until October 20, and the Bangkok Erawan Shrine Market which is closed, other major tourist attractions are still open. However, some shops may have additional restrictions such as no alcohol sales or suspended performances. Travelers are advised to take note.

Due to a 30-day suspension of all entertainment activities during the period of national mourning, some festival events have been canceled. Travelers planning to attend are advised to pay special attention to itinerary adjustments and ticket refund information.

* Chanthaburi Bright Landscape Marathon, October 29–30, 2016

* 2016 Kanchanaburi Peace World Shadow Puppet Show (originally scheduled for November 1–7, 2016, now rescheduled to February 20–26, 2017)

* 2016 Krabi Adventure Champions Cup, November 4–5, 2016

During the period of national mourning in Thailand, not only have festival events been affected, but some road traffic routes have also been closed. Travelers planning to visit Thailand soon are reminded to check with their travel agencies and local authorities for the latest updates and announcements to prepare for any changes to itineraries and transportation in advance.
