China’s Film Market -- — The Timing is Right
According to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), China’s box office revenue ranks second globally and is the fastest-growing major market. Domestic films in China have also seen rising revenues — accounting for 47.6% of total box office in 2012 and growing to 54.5% by 2014. This growth has attracted investments from prominent Chinese entrepreneurs such as Jack Ma of Alibaba Group, Pony Ma of Tencent, and Wang Jianlin of Dalian Wanda Group, who have poured billions into China’s film industry.
The Rise of Short Films
Over the past five to ten years, as more Chinese consumers have gained internet access, they have shown great enthusiasm for content creation. A 2011 study by Forrester Research revealed that 76% of Chinese people regularly post original content online — significantly higher than in the U.S. (24%) and Europe (23%). In recent years, thanks to widespread technology adoption, almost anyone can shoot a short film using a smartphone, also known as a “short film” or “micro film.” These short videos serve as a potential testbed for aspiring filmmakers and an important channel to showcase Chinese creativity and culture to the world.
