The global travel search platform Skyscanner (www.tianxun.com) recently conducted a survey targeting Chinese consumers' outbound travel plans during the May Day and Dragon Boat Festival short holidays. The survey conducted a thorough analysis of recent trends in traveler behavior, proportional data, and destination preferences, compiling a series of effective suggestions for travelers' reference.

Short Holiday Destinations Show Diversity, with the US and Japan as Top Choices

Independent outbound travel is no longer a niche way to travel and has begun to attract the attention of more and more travel enthusiasts. According to the survey, the number of people choosing to travel abroad in 2014 has exceeded 100 million. Skyscanner's short holiday data survey found that in 2015, during the May Day period alone, 11% of travelers preferred to visit the United States, a surge of 44% compared to the previous year. The extension of the US visa validity period to 10 years has undoubtedly made the US one of the hottest outbound travel destinations in 2015; meanwhile, the continued depreciation of the Japanese yen prompted 9.6% of Chinese outbound travelers to choose Japan, a 40% increase compared to 2014; and Thailand, a Southeast Asian country that has always been popular with Chinese consumers, remained highly sought after, with 9.8% of people choosing to go there during the 2015 May Day short holiday, showing a steady 9% increase from the previous year. In contrast, in the 2014 outbound tourism market, the Korean tourism boom driven by the popularity of Korean dramas cooled slightly. Although its overall ranking remained fourth, it saw a 23% negative growth. The research shows that this year's May Day destination choices are more diverse, and long-haul routes are also quite popular among Chinese outbound tourists.

Long-haul European routes may offer better value for money during the months of the short holidays

In previous analyses, Skyscanner (Skyscanner) listed the most popular outbound travel destinations during the May Day and Dragon Boat Festival short holidays. Short-haul routes and destinations in the UK and US have consistently been favored during these breaks, and the large number of consumers choosing these popular destinations has also contributed to rising ticket prices. According to Skyscanner’s investigation into global destination price fluctuations, many long-haul European routes are actually more suitable for travel in May and June, and ticket prices are also at their best during this period. To meet the needs of more consumers hoping to travel abroad, Skyscanner (Skyscanner), based on analysis of recent data, has summarized regions with relatively better ticket value and unique appeal for travel during May and June for the reference of Chinese consumers.

According to ticket trend comparisons, airfares from China to European countries such as Belgium, Italy, and France in May have seen varying degrees of decline, making them cost-effective travel options, with Belgian tickets seeing a price drop of up to 29%. June, on the other hand, is more recommendable for destinations like Finland, Poland, Malta, and Hungary. For consumers who prefer shorter flight distances and travel to Southeast Asian countries, Hong Kong and Macau offer the best value for money, especially Hong Kong, with a fluctuation of -40%, making it relatively more affordable.
