Stepping into the dark wooden cabin, all the seats are arranged in pairs by the windows, with two lounge chairs near the entrance and some instant drink packets at the far end. Once everyone was seated, the young and handsome captain set off, steering us into a landscape as picturesque as an ink painting.

Our destination was Tham Ting Cave, about a two-hour boat ride from Luang Prabang. The boat moved quite fast, and there were no glass panels on the windows, allowing the natural breeze to flow freely into the cabin. Don’t think it would get too hot—on the day we went, with temperatures around 30°C, the natural air conditioning made it comfortable even in the sun. Viewing the distant landscapes and river scenes felt even more immersive without that extra inch of barrier; or you could just lie back on the lounge chair, quietly admiring the scenery along the way, waving to passengers on the occasional passing boat, or simply getting so cozy in the cool breeze that you drift off to sleep—that’s the greatest joy of taking a Mekong River cruise.

The one-day tour included with the Mekong River cruise isn’t just about Tham Ting Cave; it also takes you deep into local villages such as the rice wine village or the paper-making village, where you can admire traditional craftsmanship and even pick up unique souvenirs to take home. But even with three or four attractions along the way, they all seemed to play second fiddle. The slow pace of the Mekong River cruise and the thoroughly relaxing atmosphere are what made this journey so truly enchanting.
