New ways to explore Hualien’s indigenous villages！ See the stunning “sky terraces” hidden in the mountains

What’s the best way to enjoy Hualien? Since 2014, the Hualien County Government has collaborated with local indigenous tribes. Among them, six vibrant tribal communities have planned eight major thematic tribal tour routes. Led by locals, these tours offer a unique tribal experience, including the breathtaking view of the “sky terraces,” allowing visitors to appreciate the distinctive beauty of the tribes.

The sky terraces are located in the Jilamili Tribe. In the Amis language, Jilamili means “big tree roots.” Here, you can admire tall beech trees and enjoy the rich greenery of the forests. In the tribe, you can experience taro farming and immerse yourself in the peaceful ambiance. The tribal landscape is dotted with stone walls and irrigation ditches, all built manually. It also showcases the profound wisdom and culture shaped by generations of tribal life. This is now a unique experience for travelers.
