The light show at Wanjin Church won't be held this year—but the main event has moved to Taiwu Elementary School, where it’ll be even more stunning

Wanjin Village in Pingtung is arguably Taiwan’s most Christmassy destination, featuring a centuries-old Catholic church. Over 70% of the local residents are devout Catholics, and the brightly lit streets during Christmas are incredibly romantic. Last year’s “Church Light Show” wowed the crowds, attracting many people to enjoy a magical Christmas night—but it might not happen this year.

Yao Fenglan, head of Pingtung County’s Tourism and Travel Department, said in an interview that the large crowds at the light show interfered with religious activities such as caroling by parishioners. To respect the local community and prioritize religious ceremonies, and also because trees in front of the church blocked the full view of the light projections, it was decided this year to move the light sculpture show to the open space of Taiwu Elementary School. The event will feature spectacular light performances with music and lighting designs, while keeping the Wanjin Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Mary serene and solemn.

The Wanjin Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Mary in Pingtung is one of Taiwan’s oldest Catholic churches, with a history of 155 years. During the Christmas season, families decorate their homes and the village, creating a sort of Taiwanese “Little Spain.” Although the church light show has been canceled, a 12-foot-tall artistic Christmas tree decorated with paintings by Indigenous children will be placed next to the basilica this year. For those wanting to soak up the festive Christmas atmosphere, Wanjin Village remains a fantastic destination.
