Taichung Chinese breakfast spot: 7 signature flaky egg pancakes & soy milk for just NT$10!

I’ve recently gotten into traditional breakfasts, mainly because I’ve pretty much tried all the brunch spots on my list. Plus, Little Cherry is an early riser, so I usually get ready and take her out for a stroll. In just one week, we ended up trying quite a few places.

That day, I had originally planned to try another vegetable egg pancake place in Taichung, but after checking Google Maps when we were out, I realized it was closed. Then, the thought of “Youli Flaky Egg Pancake” popped into my head. It’s not far from my mother-in-law’s place, and I’d brought Kevin and my mother-in-law here once before. Even she said it was delicious, though I didn’t take any photos that time… (sigh)

This time, I made sure to take good photos—tell me I did great!

“Youli Flaky Egg Pancake” is located on Lixing Road in East District, right across from Lixing Elementary School. There’s even a Ubike station on the overhang upstairs—you can rent a bike here too. We arrived a bit late that day and were worried the shop might have already closed. Luckily, we got lucky and became the last customers of the day… (prayers answered!)

That day, overhearing a chat between the older boss and the younger boss, I learned that the original owner is getting ready to retire and is currently passing down the craft to the younger one. However, they’re not father and son—they seem to be relatives!

They only serve egg pancakes and drinks here. There are 7 flavors of egg pancakes and 4 types of drinks, but by the time we arrived, it was close to closing time, and only soy milk was left for drinks.

The egg pancake wrappers here are freshly rolled and cooked on the spot. Unlike typical egg pancakes where oil is poured directly onto the griddle, “Youli Flaky Egg Pancake” spreads the oil on the wrapper itself before cooking. This significantly reduces the greasiness. Notice how there’s no oil on the griddle?

My recent routine is waking up in the morning, taking Little Cherry out for breakfast, then heading home around noon for a nap. I think this kind of lifestyle is pretty nice. Kids can be a handful at times, but Little Cherry is almost two now and gradually understands what we say. She’ll be starting kindergarten soon, so I really cherish these moments of just the two of us going out together.

Corn Egg Pancake – NT$35Compared to other breakfast shops, the egg pancakes here are a little more expensive, but since they’re handmade, I think it’s worth it!

This one was ordered for Little Cherry. After all, she’s still young, and I don’t want her eating too many processed foods.

It’s just filled with corn, but look how hearty the cross-section is. The outer layer is golden brown, crispy, and because it’s flaky, it’s noticeably less greasy!

Supreme Egg Pancake – NT$50When unsure what to order, I went for the supreme one out of greed. Honestly, another reason was curiosity—what exactly is in the supreme filling?

From the cross-section, you can see ham, corn, meat floss, and bacon… it basically includes almost all the single-flavor options from the menu (ah, except corn)! And the moment it was served, I could smell the fragrant, crispy aroma.

Just looking at the thick cut shows how generous the fillings are. Just a few bites and you’ll feel full. You can also drizzle it with chili sauce or soy paste, but I prefer it just as it is.

Soy Milk – NT$10It has a faint toasted aroma, but it’s not as rich and heavy as “Lailai Soy Milk.” The sweetness level isn’t too high either—it’s a very sincere cup of soy milk.
