To truly soak in an authentic French Christmas vibe, you must know about the King’s Cake (Galette des Rois). With its crispy outer crust and soft interior reminiscent of a mille-feuille, this unique French-style pastry has an almond filling and typically contains a small ceramic figurine. Whoever gets the piece with the figurine is said to have good luck for the coming year. The French usually enjoy this cake throughout January—the month of Epiphany—to honor the holiday.

The origin of Epiphany comes from the Christian Bible, which describes how three kings saw a bright star in the night sky before Jesus’ birth, glowing red in the heavens. Following the star, they journeyed with gifts to the manger where Jesus was born, arriving on January 6th. That’s why the day is celebrated as Epiphany.
