Methods and Tips for Drinking Water During Summer Outdoor Activities
When engaging in outdoor activities in summer, under the blazing sun and intense heat, your body will sweat heavily and easily become thirsty, requiring proper hydration. However, there’s some science behind staying hydrated on the road, and learning the right way to drink water can better protect your health. There have been numerous cases where travelers experienced health issues due to improper hydration details. Therefore, we must pay close attention to our methods.

1. Drink water frequently in small amounts during outdoor trips
When you’re thirsty during a trip, don’t drink too much at once. Instead, take small sips multiple times. Do not consume more than one liter of water per hour, and it’s best to drink about 100 to 150 milliliters at a time, with intervals of around one hour.
2. Temperature of drinking water
During summer travel, your body temperature is usually higher. Consuming large amounts of cold drinks can easily lead to digestive system illnesses, as the gastrointestinal tract becomes relatively blood-deficient due to accelerated blood circulation. Avoid beverages below 5°C; water around 10°C is ideal, as it helps reduce body temperature and quenches thirst.
3. Drink an appropriate amount of lightly salted water during outdoor trips
After physical activity during travel, your body tends to sweat heavily. Sweating leads to the loss of significant amounts of inorganic salts such as potassium, sodium, and magnesium. Therefore, it’s essential to drink some lightly salted water. A good mix is 1 gram of salt in 500 milliliters of water, which replenishes the body’s needs and helps prevent electrolyte imbalance.
4. Properly replenishing with sugar water is also important
Since strenuous activities such as hiking and trekking during travel consume a lot of calories, the glycogen stored in your body may not meet the demands of the exercise. Therefore, when participating in high-intensity or long-duration activities, it’s appropriate to drink some sugar water to timely replenish energy expenditure.
These are the four key points to keep in mind for drinking water during outdoor activities. Outdoor travelers should pay special attention. Only by staying physically comfortable can you fully enjoy your outdoor adventures.
