And what we’re talking about today
The thrill level of cave exploration falls under
The “WOW” category.

For many people, outdoor caving is still relatively unfamiliar. Unlike scuba diving, which also carries risks but is driven by the allure of the underwater world that draws countless adventurers, caving is more about exploring darkness. To be honest, even though you may discover unique rock formations and stunning natural landscapes during cave exploration, what truly captivates people is the fear evoked by the darkness and confinement.

Let’s first address whether caving is as “bare-handed, wall-scaling, roof-jumping” as depicted in "Tomb Raider." The answer is definitely: NO — and a big fat NO at that!

Free solo climbing is an activity done without any tools or safety gear, relying solely on your limbs to climb. Weak arm strength or a slight misstep could be fatal. If you insist on imitating movie stunts, I can only promise you this: you’ll be making intimate contact with the ground in no time.
In reality, cave exploration can generally be divided into two types: water cave exploration and dry cave exploration. As the name suggests, a water cave refers to a karst cave with year-round underground water flow. A dry cave is a fossil cave that is no longer connected to a free water surface. The latter often develops in higher-altitude areas, has a long history, and is usually adorned with a variety of colorful stalactites.

Later research revealed that this seemingly death-defying sport actually existed in our country as far back as the Ming Dynasty!! — and the person behind it was Xu Xiake. (All I can say is, ancient people really had a lot of free time.)

British scholar Joseph Needham commented that Xu Xiake’s writings are less like the works of 17th-century intellectuals and more like 20th-century field expedition records. Unfortunately, Xu Xiake’s works did not include any cave maps — whether they were lost or he simply never thought to draw them is unclear. After Xu Xiake, China saw few successors in cave exploration, leaving caves as some of the last “mysterious” places left untouched on the land.
To be honest, in our country, the number of people who engage in cave exploration is far from matching the vastness of our territory. There seem to be no specialized stores selling cave gear, and some equipment is occasionally available in outdoor or sports shops, but most enthusiasts purchase their gear from international websites.
However, in the West, caving has developed into a systematic sport, attracting many young participants. Before joining expeditions, participants must undergo rigorous technical training at caving schools and obtain certification. Certified cavers must not only be capable of exploring caves alone but also possess skills such as rescuing others in emergencies and mapping caves. (Being able to save yourself and others in danger — that’s true safety awareness.)

What makes cave exploration appealing is the thrill of venturing into the unknown darkness. With such a gloomy direction of exploration, what exactly is it that attracts us?
“Cave exploration has made me rethink the concept of challenge. I’ve realized that challenges are always present.”
Yes, challenges are always around us. They appear when “you’ve been running for three months but your weight hasn’t changed,” or when “you’ve been lifting weights for two months but your chest muscles still look flat,” or during those monotonous chicken breast dinners, or when “you turn down party invitations for feasting and instead head alone to the gym...”

By the way, have you noticed that every extreme sport associated with the “WOW series” brings breathtaking views unlike anything else — just like life itself — every transformation leads to a brand-new version of yourself.

The “line between sea and ice” discovered through caving

The “nebula” discovered through caving

The “starry sky” discovered through caving

The temple discovered through caving
So,
let’s look forward to your next
“WOW”!
