Precautions
Changbai Mountain is more suitable for visiting in summer and autumn, but the mountain takes on a different kind of beauty in winter—covered in silver and extraordinarily enchanting. Although winter at Changbai Mountain is stunning, the temperatures are extremely low, with the coldest reaching below minus forty degrees. Therefore, the impact of the low temperatures on your trip must be taken into account.

Regarding Clothing
The temperature on Changbai Mountain in winter is also much lower than in other regions at the same latitude, especially because the wind on the mountain is strong. Therefore, it is essential to be fully prepared for the cold (down jackets and pants, snow boots, sunglasses, gloves), and you must also protect any exposed skin on your face.
1. Wear a down jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves, and try to cover as much of your face as possible. You can carry heat pads or warm packs to help keep warm.
2. Warm and non-slip shoes are very important. Travelers can choose snow boots that are anti-slip and moisture-proof. Absolutely do not buy those with hard plastic soles, as the plastic becomes brittle and hard in low temperatures, making it easier to slip.
3. In winter, Changbai Mountain is covered in white snow and is also the highest point in the region, so the sunlight is particularly strong when direct, reflecting off the snow and causing glare. It’s best to prepare a pair of sunglasses.
4. During the snowy season, it’s best to wear boots or prepare leg gaiters to connect your shoes and pants; otherwise, snow can easily get inside.
Regarding Cameras
1. In winter, temperatures are low. Be sure to bring a camera that can function normally in the cold. Typically, traditional mechanical film cameras are more resistant to low temperatures—for example, models like the NIKON FM2. Most electronic components in modern digital cameras struggle to work properly in the cold.
2. Digital cameras are even more sensitive to low temperatures, especially their batteries. The cold affects battery discharge, so carry several fully charged spare batteries, and keep the backups in a warm place close to your body.
3. Keep your camera in a warm, close-to-body place during winter. Only take it out when you need to use it, and put it away immediately after use to prevent it from freezing. When moving suddenly from outdoors to indoors, do not expose the camera to the air, as condensation may form on the cold lens surface.
4. Skip this if you don’t have a special wide-angle lens. When taking close-up shots of Heaven Lake on Changbai Mountain, if you want to capture the entire lake in the frame, you’ll need as wide an angle as possible—often even a 16mm fisheye lens is used.
