The primary cause of high-altitude pulmonary edema is hypoxia at high altitudes. However, various triggering factors also play a certain role in the onset of the disease. Currently, it is believed that the causes of high-altitude pulmonary edema are related to the following factors.
(1) Hypoxic stimulation causes blood redistribution, resulting in increased pulmonary blood flow. Due to increased vagal nerve excitability, there is bronchial spasm..., (2) Hypoxia causes pulmonary arteriole spasm, leading to elevated pulmonary artery pressure.
(3) Hypoxia directly or indirectly damages the endothelial cells of pulmonary capillaries, increasing permeability and causing fluid and cells from the blood vessels to enter the alveoli, forming pulmonary edema.
(4) Hypoxia leads to thrombus formation in the pulmonary blood vessels. Widespread fibrin thrombus formation in the pulmonary capillaries due to hypoxia exacerbates pulmonary hypertension, causing pulmonary circulation disorders and uneven blood flow distribution.
These factors can influence each other. Increased pulmonary artery pressure, hypoxic damage to pulmonary capillaries, increased permeability, elevated pulmonary blood flow, and thrombus formation in pulmonary capillaries all contribute to the development of pulmonary edema.
Triggers of high-altitude pulmonary edema include cold, overexertion, and infection. The occurrence of high-altitude pulmonary edema is also related to individual differences and genetic susceptibility factors.
