Breathtaking scenery like a fairyland – the most beautiful hidden waterfall reopens

Located upstream of the Ashiwen River in Shizi Township, Pingtung County, the Kayou Peak Waterfall is the largest of its kind in southern Taiwan. In summer, when water levels are high, layered mountains and lush valleys unfold before your eyes. Netizens have praised it as a paradise on earth, and it was also a filming location for the Taiwanese movie “The Missing Piece.”

Due to typhoons and heavy rains that caused damage to roads and bridges, if you wish to visit this remote area, it's recommended to join a local guided tour.

The trail to the waterfall winds up along the Ashiwen River through valleys and cliffs. You can listen to the murmuring stream and gaze at the verdant valley. The guardrails along the path are carved with indigenous totems, exuding a strong Paiwan cultural vibe. The final viewpoint offers the best panoramic view of the waterfall. With a drop of about 40 meters, the waterfall cascades down from a cliff, fanning out beautifully.

Here, the waterfall is majestic, and under the sunlight, rainbows can be seen shimmering faintly. The pool is crystal-clear, allowing you to dip your feet in the shallow areas — making it a great summer escape. Aside from cooling off at the waterfall, you can also plan a one-day trip around nearby attractions.

The Kayou Peak Waterfall Recreation Area has postponed its reopening due to construction progress. The new opening date will be confirmed after December 31, 2018. To avoid potential danger due to incomplete safety facilities, visitors are advised not to enter the area before its official reopening.
