Alishan’s annual Perseid Meteor Shower event features three sessions of the “Meteor Season” astronomical and ecological experience camp at Alishan National Forest Recreation Area on August 10–11, August 13–14, and August 14–15. Watching the stars on the mountain on the eve of Qixi Festival is both romantic and a chance to see the rare meteor shower.

The “Perseid Meteor Shower” is one of the three major meteor showers, alongside the “Quadrantid Meteor Shower” and the “Geminid Meteor Shower.” Named for the meteors radiating from the constellation Perseus in the northeast, the Perseids are high-speed meteors that appear annually from late July to late August. Among the three major meteor showers, it has the brightest display and is the easiest to observe in Taiwan.

To get the best view of the meteor shower, you need a location with minimal light pollution and an open, expansive view. Alishan National Forest Recreation Area, situated at over 2,000 meters above sea level with little light pollution, open surroundings, and a cool climate, is the perfect spot for stargazing. This session of the event coincides with Qixi Festival week, making it the most unforgettable Valentine’s experience—watching the Perseid meteors fall toward the horizon with your loved one, as dazzling streaks light up the night sky, accompanied by detailed explanations from professional astronomers.

During the day, the event includes enriching activities such as guided tours of Alishan, riding the small train, forest trail ecology briefings, bird identification in Alishan, hands-on telescope operation, and themed astronomy activities. At night, the highlight of the astronomical and ecological camp is a stargazing competition and live observation of the spectacular Perseid Meteor Shower.

Each session has a limit of 20 participants. Recommended for elementary school students in grade 5 and above. The fee is NT$1,800 per person.
