No Break with Taiwan ! Airline Announces Suspension of Flights to China

Recently, mainland China has been putting increasing pressure on airlines from various countries as well as on our allied nations. Last November, citing Palau’s maintenance of diplomatic relations with Taiwan, China issued a travel ban prohibiting flights to Palau, and Palau Pacific Airways also responded by announcing the suspension of its China routes.

Since China instructed travel agencies to stop selling flights to Palau last November, the number of mainland tourists has significantly dropped, leading to losses for both Palau Pacific Airways and Palau’s Century Hotel. As a result, they have decided to completely cancel flights to mainland China in order to reduce losses.

Palau’s president stated in an interview earlier this year that Palau is a democratic and law-based country that will make its own appropriate decisions. He has repeatedly expressed the stance of not severing ties with Taiwan and promised that the travel ban would not threaten Palau’s economy but could even enhance the diversity of its tourism industry.

In response to Palau’s efforts to diversify its tourism market and to help attract more overseas visitors, our national airlines, in addition to operating two regular weekly flights, have added two more flights between June and August, totaling four direct flights per week from Taiwan to Palau.
