A Must-See in a Lifetime: Shirakawa-go Gassho Village 2019 Winter Illumination Schedule

Known as a dream destination that one must visit in their lifetime – Shirakawa-go Gassho Village is not only listed as one of Japan’s Three Hidden Regions but was also registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. This secluded paradise nestled deep in the mountains is a great place to visit all year round, especially during the winter illumination when the snowy landscape glows with a magical warmth, resembling a scene from a fairy tale.

To help travelers plan their trips earlier, the official Shirakawa-go website has announced the 2019 winter illumination dates: January 14, 20, 27, and February 3, 11, and 17, each from 17:30 to 19:30 at night.

The Shirakawa-go Gassho Village illumination is one of the most anticipated events of the year for visitors. During this time, the village transforms into a silver-white wonderland, glittering with warm lights like a starry sky, creating an indescribably breathtaking view. Travelers hoping to experience this should start planning now.

According to the Shirakawa-go Tourism Association's official website, in recent years the illumination event has attracted large crowds, leading to congestion in parking areas and observation decks. Therefore, starting in 2019, a “full reservation system” will be implemented for the nighttime illuminations for the first time. Anyone staying overnight in the village, using the parking lot for self-driving, or taking the shuttle bus to the observation deck must register and go through a selection process. Those not selected will not be allowed to enter the village to view the illumination.

Notes:
1. Only those with a parking permit are allowed to park in the parking lot.
2. Shuttle bus tickets to the observation deck require advance reservation. If there are too many applications, a random selection will be conducted.
※ If you are not reserving to attend the illumination event, the Seseragi Parking Lot will close at 2 PM on the day of the event. Only vehicles larger than small buses can park until 5 PM; the observation deck will also close at 3 PM.
