Zheng Wen's Grand故宫 Exhibition: A Millennium's Question – Taiwanese Comic Master's Original Works Enter the Hall of Fame

A Comic Master Makes Debut at the故宫 ! "A Millennium’s Question: The故宫 Zheng Wen Grand Exhibition" is the first special exhibition at the故宫 featuring a Taiwanese-born comic artist. On display are hundreds of precious original manuscripts, drafts, and diverse works created by the master during his lifetime. The phrase "A Millennium’s Question" signifies that "a once-in-a-millennium genius like Zheng Wen only appears once every thousand years."

The world’s first comic artist to exhibit at the故宫 , Zheng Wen—whose real name is Zheng Jinwen—is a legendary figure in the comic world, born in Daxi District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan. He was the first Taiwanese comic artist to make a sensational impact across Japan, the creator behind Japan’s first video game named after a Taiwanese writer—《Zheng Wen’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms》—and the first non-Japanese to win Japan’s highest industry honor, the Comic Artists Association’s Excellence Award (for his work 《Heroes of the Eastern Zhou》). Additionally, 《The Thunderbolt Fantasy》 was the first comic series by a Taiwanese creator serialized in Hong Kong. Japan’s Asahi Shimbun praised him as a "genius, a wonder, an extraordinary talent" in the comic world, unmatched for 20 years.

This exhibition not only comprehensively presents Zheng Wen’s astonishing achievements across all fields but also exhibits comic manuscripts, illustration drafts, character design sketches, script drafts, hand-sculpted prototypes, statues, and technique documentaries. Through original works spanning thirty years, the exhibition reconstructs the incomparably brilliant creative journey of Mr. Zheng Wen’s life.

Zheng Wen merged Eastern and Western techniques to develop his own unique ink wash and acrylic painting styles. With an unprecedented level of detail in comics, and compositions full of dramatic tension, he not only challenged the world’s imagination of art but also brought Taiwanese comics to international prominence.
