Tipping art is a mysterious thing for Taiwanese who don’t have this culture—it’s either not tipping enough or just throwing money around.The UK's Daily Mailhas compiled tipping rates around the world, clearly stating when and how much to tip. Be sure to read up before your trip.

1. United States
American waitstaff rely on tips to make a living—don’t enjoy their service without paying. The rate is usually 15–25% of the service cost, and remember to tip an extra 20% when taking a taxi.

2. Canada
The tipping range is similar to that in the US, but tips are extra—though it’s best to give something.

3. Portugal
Around 10% is appropriate.

4. Australia
Australia doesn’t have a tipping culture, but it’s good to tip at restaurants or for taxis.

5. Thailand
Basically, there’s no tipping culture in Thailand, but tipping can make street vendors or service staff in less fortunate situations very happy.

6. Belgium
Tipping isn’t very common.

7. Italy
Tips are usually already included in the bill.

8. Japan
Similar to Italy, but for guides, you can give a tip—just place the money in an envelope and hand it over with both hands.

9. Switzerland
There’s no tipping culture.
