Jet-powered facelift: Painted train cars showcase Taiwan’s stunning scenery, perfect for photos

As summer approaches, the Taoyuan Airport MRT has also unveiled a brand-new look. To promote marine tourism in Taiwan’s outlying islands and sightseeing in Hualien, the Taoyuan Airport MRT has freshly painted one regular train car and one express car, featuring carefully selected scenic spots from across Taiwan. The exterior paint, interior design, and all stations have been redesigned to create a highly Taiwanese-style painted train.

Among them, the exterior of the regular car is interpreted in a striking blue that best represents Taiwan’s oceans. In addition to being printed with marine life from Taiwan’s islands—such as turtles from Little Liuqiu, pufferfish from Penghu, and flying fish from Orchid Island—it also features beautiful sights like the Fuying Islet Lighthouse and the Double-Heart Stone Weir on Qimei Island in Penghu. Additionally, representative water activities of the bay, such as surfing and snorkeling, can also be found on the exterior of the car, vivid and lively.

For the express car’s painting, to revitalize Hualien’s tourism after the earthquake, it was designed in collaboration with the British-based contemporary indigenous artist Master Yosifu. Boldly using bright block backgrounds and portraits of indigenous people, the design highlights the spirit of Hualien’s indigenous people and maritime charm through the visual impact of color. The richness of tropical fish hues showcases a sense of fashion without reservation.

The painted trains are now in service, with the dazzling blue of the bays and the vibrant colors of Hualien bringing an experience unlike any before for passengers from home and abroad, allowing them to appreciate the beauty of the outlying islands’ ocean scenery and Hualien.
