Typhoon Kaemi Forms as the Sixth Typhoon; Heavy Rain Expected During the Dragon Boat Festival Holiday

A tropical depression located southwest of Taiwan has moved inland over Kaohsiung. On the morning of the 15th, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced that this tropical depression has developed into this year’s sixth typhoon, Kaemi. Meanwhile, the Central Weather Bureau stated that Taiwan currently still classifies it as a tropical depression, with wind strength not yet reaching typhoon force, and therefore has not yet issued maritime or land typhoon warnings.

This tropical depression made landfall along the coast of Kaohsiung at 7:00 AM, with an indistinct center. It has moved into the southwestern part of Taiwan, with its intensity slightly weakening, and is moving northeastward at a speed of 15 km/h. Strong gusts of wind at levels 9 to 10 have been recorded in coastal areas of Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and the Hengchun Peninsula. The southern and eastern regions of Taiwan can still expect strong gusts during the day.

The Dragon Boat Festival holiday begins tomorrow. Whether this tropical depression will develop into this year’s sixth typhoon, Kaemi, remains under ongoing observation. What is certain is that due to the influence of the tropical depression and its peripheral circulation, rainfall is expected across Taiwan today, especially in southern regions. The Central Weather Bureau has issued a torrential rain warning for four southern counties and cities as of the 15th, a heavy rain warning for eight other counties and cities including central Taiwan, Yilan, and Hualien-Taitung, and has also issued strong wind advisories for 19 other counties and cities.
