Unable to withstand rising rents year after year, Brown Sugar announces closure

The well-known music restaurant "Brown Sugar," with over 20 years of history in Taipei, announced on its official Facebook page on June 12 that due to economic impacts, changes in consumer behavior, rising costs over the years, and other factors, it has decided to temporarily cease operations starting immediately and will explore new business ventures to relaunch.

Brown Sugar holds nostalgic value for many people from the 1960s and 70s and was once the go-to weekend spot. Originally located on Jinshan South Road, it later moved to Songren Road in Xinyi District, often packed with crowds on weekends. However, with changing consumer habits in recent years, venues such as folk song Western restaurants and The Ladies' Store have also closed one after another.

Brown Sugar has become an iconic jazz music restaurant in Taipei and a pioneer for foreign singers performing in Taiwan. Renowned local artists such as Huang Xiaobo, Lin Xiaopei, and Li Shengjie have all performed here. However, after years of operation and multiple rent hikes, the business could no longer bear the operational costs, leading to its closure.

Although the business is closing its doors with great reluctance, it will also explore new ventures and plans to relaunch in the near future with a brand-new format and enriched content, aiming to bring the Brown Sugar brand back to the spotlight.
