Ever since our daughter turned three, we’ve made a lantern of her own every year, so she can carry it and admire the festive lights during the Lantern Festival.

Because it’s homemade, you’re guaranteed to find no other lantern exactly like it.

Our daughter’s lanterns are truly one of a kind.

The Tiger Year’s “&” and the Rabbit Year’s “&”

The 2012 “Paper Cup Lantern” and the 2013 “Red Envelope Lantern”

Just as I was racking my brains over what recycled materials to use for this year’s lantern,

I happened to receive three boxes of fresh strawberries sent from my parents’ home in Taichung.

Aside from enjoying the sweet, juicy taste of the season’s strawberries,

what pleasantly surprised me even more were those big, round transparent plastic containers.

This is it!!

Wouldn’t it be such a waste not to turn it into a lantern??

Actually, there are many similar containers out there, varying in shape and size,

but with a bit of creativity and smart use, each can make a great lantern material.

Materials ready: 1 transparent plastic box, several sheets of colored paper, double-sided tape, acrylic paint, lantern handle

Step 1: First, paint the two sides of the plastic box with acrylic paint. It’s recommended to use light colors and apply thin coats to allow light to pass through.

Step 2: After drying the paint with a hairdryer, use a marker pen to draw the lion’s facial features.

Step 3: Color in the lion’s facial features.

After finishing one side, dry it with a hairdryer, then do the other side.

Step 4: Use double-sided tape around the plastic box and attach colored paper to create the mane.

You can alternate between two or more colors of paper for a richer effect on the mane.

Using yarn for the mane could also produce great results.

Step 5: If the mane isn’t varied or dense enough, roll colored paper into tubes and stick them around the plastic box.

Step 6: At the center top of the plastic box, make a small cut, insert the bulb of the lantern handle, secure it, and you’re done!!

Our daughter is six years old this year.

Her skills and control in drawing and coloring have improved a lot compared to the past.

She can also mostly complete the folding and pasting parts on her own.

So throughout the whole making process, I only helped with cutting paper, handing her paint,

and drawing the green parts with a marker pen.

And making this lantern isn’t difficult—girls can easily complete it on their own!

But for younger children, since their fine motor skills are not yet fully developed,

they may have less control over brush strokes or paper folding in terms of precision and pressure.

In such cases, adults can help with the drawing, and the kids can simply practice coloring and sticking—this works too!
