With the rise of painted community culture, more and more old houses and alleyways in Taiwan have been revitalized, attracting many visitors. Among the various community painting themes, cats—with their innocent big eyes and mischievous personalities—are often the stars of the walls. Their lifelike and playful appearances are so irresistible that you can’t help but snap photo after photo. Yintong Community in Tainan

The Yintong Community in Tainan’s West Central District has many old houses. To revitalize the area, local residents worked together to paint the alleyways with vibrant and lively patterns, brightening up the formerly drab neighborhood. The area is also known as “Cat Highlands” because of the many cats that roam around. Locals have even painted images of these cats on walls and set up cat-themed installations—every corner is super cute.

Jingpu Community Cat World

In recent years, Taiwan has seen a wave of painted village trends. Many “painted villages” have attracted visitors again thanks to their vivid murals. The Jingpu Community in Minxiong, Chiayi, has also emerged with lively and adorable “cat paintings,” creating the “Jingpu Community Cat World.” Inspired by Minxiong’s former name “Damao” (meaning “to beat cats”), the rural community’s low walls are now filled with lifelike cat murals: kittens snuggling up to each other, cats lounging lazily in bowls—each one equally eye-catching.

Yunlin Huwei Cat Village

The son of the chairman of Dingxi Community created a picture book titled “The Cat on the Roof,” based on a cat named “Xiao Mi” that was brought to the community by a stray mother cat. A few years ago, Xiao Mi died unexpectedly. Unwilling to let go, residents enlisted movie billboard painters Tian Rongqian and Su Kunfu to bring Xiao Mi’s story back to life on the community’s faded red brick walls. The cat’s tail is curled high, paws wrapped around a flower bed; under a big tree, there’s a wooden cat platform—you can even hide inside a feed can or look for cats hiding under the eaves and beams. If you’re lucky, you might even meet a tiny chibi-style chinchilla bus, adorably waiting for you in a corner.
