We’ve entered the last month of the year, and every December, streets and alleys start to deck out in Christmas cheer, making it hard not to feel the festive vibe, and now when Baobei Ting sees a Christmas tree, she’ll say “Christmas.” In fact, everything and everyone in life can subtly help little ones absorb new knowledge like sponges.

Teach kids to celebrate the holidays while saving money—a DIY Christmas tree, no need to buy one!

Last year, Baobei Ting was too young to understand the special meaning of this holiday, so I just wore a festive headpiece and took a few photos to mark the occasion. This year, I came up with a few handmade crafts we could do together to add some fun.

Tools & materials: corrugated paper, foam tape, utility knife, scissors, decorative items — draw a Christmas tree pattern on A4 paper and cut it out —

— Cut out two or more of the drawn Christmas trees from corrugated paper — (originally wanted to use cardstock, but then thought corrugated paper would be sturdier)

— Cut along the white dashed lines on the two pieces of corrugated paper to prepare for assembling the two pieces —

— Once the two pieces of corrugated paper are assembled, the Christmas tree can stand on its own —

— At that moment, Baobei Ting happened to be watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse’s episode about saving Santa XD —

— Searched online for relevant seasonal materials, resized them appropriately, and printed them out —

— Cut out each pattern one by one —

— Then stick foam tape on the back of the patterns — (you can also use double-sided tape, but I used foam tape to make the patterns more three-dimensional)

— If you’re worried the little one might have trouble peeling the backing off, you can fold over a corner first. I only folded a few because Baobei Ting peeled them off quite easily —

— Baobei Ting had a lot of fun sticking them on and learned about gingerbread dolls, snowflakes, poinsettias... during the process

— She was so happy to finish sticking everything by herself —

— Here’s another one —

— Stick on these small seasonal images, and you can have a Christmas tree at home without spending a lot —

— Finally, I made a small adjustment at the top of the tree to make this mini Christmas tree even more perfect —

— Placed it on the entryway cabinet along with the little snowman —
