The origin of quick-drying:The term "quick-dry" is actually a direct translation from English words like QUICK-DRY or DRY-EASY. Quick-dry refers to garments made from this type of fabric that, under the same external conditions, dry faster than those made from wool or cotton. As the name suggests, quick-dry clothing dries more quickly. It doesn't absorb sweat but instead transfers sweat rapidly to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates through air circulation, achieving the goal of fast drying. Generally, quick-dry clothes dry up to 50% faster than cotton fabrics.

Performance of quick-dry clothing:Some people think quick-dry clothing is very mysterious, assuming it contains a lot of high-tech components. In reality, most quick-dry garments are made from synthetic fabrics. However, due to different manufacturing processes, they possess various magical features not found in ordinary clothing. They have low water absorption but decent breathability (depending on the material), along with some water resistance. When wet, they dry faster compared to regular clothing under body heat or wind.

Design concept of quick-dry clothing:The design philosophy of quick-dry clothing is closely related to its quick-drying principle and usage environment. Quick-dry clothing emerged in response to outdoor usage needs. Typically, you can start wearing quick-dry clothing in the transition between spring and summer, when it is much more convenient and practical than bulky waterproof jackets.

The original design concept of quick-dry clothing was mainly based on two considerations:

A. Internal factors: People engaging in outdoor activities tend to sweat easily. During intense physical activity, the whole body may become drenched in sweat. If you're wearing regular clothing, it tends to stick tightly to your skin, which feels very uncomfortable. However, quick-dry clothing allows sweat to evaporate quickly from the body.

B. External factors: When walking outdoors, morning dew or light drizzle can soak your clothes. If pant legs stick to your legs, it creates an uncomfortable sensation. Quick-dry clothing, thanks to its quick-drying performance and water-resistant features, helps you avoid these unnecessary inconveniences. Quick-dry fabrics: There are countless brands of quick-dry clothing on the market, using a dazzling array of fabrics.

Common outdoor quick-dry clothing fabrics mainly include the following types:

MONI-DRY is a moisture-wicking and quick-drying fabric developed by COLUMBIA. Its main features are superior moisture evaporation and absorption capabilities—2–3 times stronger than regular cotton—thus effectively keeping the wearer comfortable and dry.

CIBAULTRAPHIL is a product of Ciba. The greatest advantage of this fabric is its comfort and ease of cleaning. It was specially designed by Ciba to optimize moisture control in clothing and enhance its aesthetic appeal. This fabric helps effectively wick sweat, keeping the body dry and comfortable while also preventing static electricity, helping clothes stay shiny and new.

ACTIVENT is a chemical material produced by the American company GORE. It is both windproof and highly breathable, with some water resistance. It is a type of membrane that needs to be laminated with other nylon materials. It is particularly suitable for cycling enthusiasts.

COOLMAX is one of the most common and widely used fabrics, developed by DuPont. Its standout feature is its strong sweat absorption and moisture-wicking ability, thanks to COOLMAX’s hollow structure. However, when purchasing, it's essential to check the proportion of COOLMAX in the fabric.

THEMOLITE is a polyester fiber with good insulation properties, belonging to the hollow polyester fiber series, but it has relatively poor moisture-wicking performance.

M.C.S is a protective, high-tech synthetic fabric fiber with strong moisture absorption capabilities, quickly transferring moisture to the body's surface. This fabric also offers high wear and deformation resistance, resists pilling and tearing, and maintains bright colors even after multiple washes and ironings.

Principles behind the quick-drying capability of fabrics:This is a highly technical issue. Different fabrics use different principles. Some rely on characteristics similar to shape-memory polymers; others use micro-porous membrane principles, or exploit differences in the diameter of water droplets versus water and air molecules. Here, we will focus on the micro-porous membrane principle. Quick-dry fabrics using the micro-porous membrane principle are very common in the market. Their quick-drying capability comes from a membrane with pore sizes between the maximum diameters of water and air molecules and the minimum diameter of water droplets. This membrane is then bonded with outer-layer fabric, giving the material waterproof and breathable properties. This is somewhat similar to the principle behind GORE-TEX. With this principle, it's the micro-porous membrane that does the work—it provides both water resistance and breathability. Whether using the micro-porous membrane principle or any other, these are ultimately just synthetic fabrics made from different fibers.
