The origin of "quick-dry": The term "quick-dry" is actually a direct translation from similar English words such as QUICK-DRY or DRY-EASY. It refers to the fact that compared to clothing made of wool or cotton, garments made of quick-dry fabric can evaporate moisture more easily under the same external conditions, drying faster. As the name suggests, quick-dry clothing dries more quickly. It doesn’t absorb sweat but instead quickly transfers it to the surface of the clothing, where it evaporates through air circulation, achieving the goal of fast drying. Generally, quick-dry clothing dries about 50% faster than cotton fabrics.

The performance of quick-dry clothing: Some people think quick-dry clothing is quite mysterious, assuming it contains lots of high-tech elements. In reality, most quick-dry clothing is made from synthetic fabrics, but due to different manufacturing techniques, it possesses various magical properties not found in ordinary clothing. It has low water absorption, decent breathability (depending on the material), and a certain degree of water repellency. When wet, it dries faster than regular clothing under the influence of body heat or wind.

The design philosophy of quick-dry clothing: The design concept of quick-dry clothing is inseparable from its quick-dry principle and usage environment. Quick-dry clothing emerged in response to the demands of outdoor environments. Typically, it can be worn during the transition between spring and summer, when it is much more convenient and practical than heavy waterproof jackets.

The initial design philosophy of quick-dry clothing was mainly based on two considerations:

A. Internal factors: People who engage in outdoor activities tend to sweat a lot. During intense exercise, they may be drenched in sweat. If you’re wearing regular clothing, it will stick tightly to your skin, which feels very uncomfortable. Quick-dry clothing, however, allows sweat to evaporate quickly from the body.

B. External factors: While hiking outdoors, morning dew or light rain can soak your clothes. If your pant legs stick to your legs, it creates an uncomfortable feeling. With quick-dry clothing, its quick-drying and water-repellent properties help you avoid these unnecessary troubles. Quick-dry fabrics: There are numerous brands of quick-dry clothing on the market, using a dazzling variety of fabrics.

In fact, the fabrics used in common outdoor quick-dry clothing mainly fall into the following types:

COOLMAX: This is one of the most common and widely used fabrics, developed by DuPont. Its standout feature is its strong sweat absorption and wicking capability, thanks to the hollow structure of COOLMAX. However, it’s important to check the proportion of COOLMAX in the fabric when purchasing.

THEMOLITE: This polyester fiber has good insulation properties and belongs to the hollow polyester fiber series, but its sweat-wicking performance is relatively weaker.

MONI-DRY: A moisture-absorbing and quick-drying fabric developed by COLUMBIA. Its main features are superior volatility and water absorption, 2–3 times stronger than regular cotton, effectively maintaining wearer comfort and dryness.

CIBAULTRAPHIL: A product of Ciba, this fabric’s greatest advantages are comfort and ease of cleaning. It was specifically designed by Ciba to optimize moisture control and enhance appearance. It helps effectively wick sweat, keeping the body dry and comfortable, while also preventing static electricity and keeping clothes looking bright and new after multiple washes and ironings.

ACTIVENT: A chemical material produced by the American company GORE, it is both windproof and highly breathable, with some water resistance. It’s a membrane that needs to be laminated with other nylon materials and is well-suited for cycling enthusiasts.

M.C.S: A protective, high-tech synthetic fabric fiber with strong moisture absorption capabilities, quickly drawing moisture away from the body’s surface. It also offers high wear and deformation resistance, is non-pilling, tear-resistant, and retains vibrant colors even after multiple washes and ironings.

The quick-dry principle of fabrics: This is a highly specialized topic. Different fabrics use different principles, such as those based on shape-memory polymers, microporous membranes, or the differences in molecular diameters between water droplets, water molecules, and air molecules. Here, we’ll focus on the microporous membrane principle. Quick-dry fabrics using the microporous membrane principle are very common on the market. Their quick-dry functionality comes from a membrane with pores sized between the maximum diameter of water and air molecules and the minimum diameter of water droplets. This membrane is then bonded with outer fabric layers, giving the material waterproof and breathable properties. This is somewhat similar to the principle behind GORE-TEX. In such fabrics, the microporous membrane does the work—it repels water and allows breathability. Whether using the microporous membrane principle or others, these are ultimately just synthetic fabrics made from different fibers.

Functionality and features of quick-dry clothing: Many people, after exercising, choose to wear “comfortable and breathable” pure cotton clothing to get rid of the uncomfortable feeling of sweat accumulating on their skin. But in reality, cotton clothing only absorbs sweat and isn’t breathable, making it unsuitable for workouts. The correct choice is a loose, comfortable, stretchy, breathable, and sweat-wicking quick-dry shirt. The main function of quick-dry clothing is rapid sweat removal—quickly absorbing and spreading sweat from the skin and accelerating evaporation by maximizing surface area. Typically, sweat on the back can dry within 20 minutes. Wearing regular sportswear and immediately resting after exercise can lead to illness due to changes in body temperature. Quick-dry clothing, however, wicks moisture away while providing warmth, helping keep the skin dry and fresh. Especially for outdoor sports, quick-dry clothing performs better in windproof, waterproof, and moisture-resistant functions. Even if completely soaked, quick-dry clothing can dry in just half an hour.
