Every weekend, there’s always a group of young people who ride bicycles without brakes, weaving through the underground passages and squares of Nanning. Their vibrant and colorful bikes never fail to catch the eye of passersby. These bikes, commonly known as “Fixed Gear” (fixed-gear), are called Fixed Gear in English and Racing Wheel (Jinglun) in Chinese.
Fixed-gear cycling is all about passion !
Fixed-gear cycling is hugely popular abroad. There’s a saying that fixed-gear bikes were originally used by postal workers overseas before being stylized with fashionable elements to become trendy rides. In Nanning, the fixed-gear scene has only emerged in recent years, and currently there are dozens of riders—mostly young trendsetters in their teens and twenties.
Fixed-gear cycling is about individuality !
Many enthusiasts enjoy customizing their own fixed-gear bikes, with prices ranging from 1,000 yuan to several thousand. Though each bike may have a simple design, the colors of the components are incredibly diverse. Different hues of frames and wheels can sometimes be adorned with unique patterns—there are no restrictions. The kaleidoscope of colors reflects each rider’s distinct personality and tastes.
Fixed-gear cycling is about friendship !
Within the fixed-gear community, most riders were once strangers brought together by their shared love for the sport. “Bicycle Smile” and advertising designer Ah Xu became friends through fixed-gear biking. Both ordered their bikes online because they felt the retro yet bold designs perfectly matched their personalities. Over time, their shared passion led to a deep friendship. Now, whenever they’re free, the two cruise around the city on their fixed-gear bikes, claiming it’s for “finding creative inspiration.”
Fixed-gear cycling is about skill !
A fixed-gear bicycle consists of just a frame, two wheels, a handlebar, and a saddle—no brake cables, no gear shifters, and no fenders. Riding a fixed-gear mainly involves using your feet to control forward and backward motion, and it also allows for a variety of tricks. Skilled riders can perform moves like track stands, drifts, backward riding, and jumps. Young fixed-gear enthusiasts often gather for rides, casual cycling meetups, and friendly competitions to show off their skills—or even play bike polo for an extra thrill. “This ‘fixed-gear’ isn’t something you can just hop on and ride; you really need the skills,” says rider “Xiao Gui” proudly. “Fixed-gear is thrilling, but skill is essential.”
