The best supporting role in Taiwanese cuisine—scallions—are grown in their finest form in Sanying, Yilan. To let more people enjoy these high-quality scallions while also experiencing farm life, fourth-generation farmer Li Jianhong has opened several plots of his scallion fields to visitors for hands-on harvesting.
Traveling along County Highway 7C through the countryside to Sanying, Yilan, the scenery transitions from concrete buildings to open fields, lifting your spirits along the way. Turning onto a small side road, you’ll see harvested rice paddies reflecting the sky, looking especially refreshing under the winter sun. Farmer Li Jianhong’s scallion fields are located by the Lanyang River, with the experience area separated by a gravel parking lot from the restaurant, homestay, DIY classroom, and expansive scallion fields.
Keeping up with the times, Farmer Li has transformed agriculture into leisure tourism by offering experiences such as harvesting scallions in the fields and making scallion pancakes at the table, allowing visitors to learn about this key pillar of Yilan’s economy—the Sanying scallion.
Farmer Li leads both kids and adults into the fields to harvest scallions. No special skills are needed—just pull hard, and you’re good to go. Each person can harvest three scallion plants (about half a kilogram). After picking, everyone heads back to the shed to wash off the dirt under running water, an activity that encourages children to clean things with their own hands.
Another farm experience is making scallion pancakes, which is better suited for children aged five and up due to the height of the tables. A guide walks each participant through the steps, which are simple and easy to follow: flatten the dough, roll out the wrapper, wrap in scallions, and then hand it over to the staff to fry in oil on the spot. Every child is eager to taste the pancake they made themselves.
Beyond these two experiences, the Onion Shed Experience Farm also offers a restaurant, homestay, and café. The restaurant serves local Yilan specialties such as Sio-lo Meat and Scallion Harvest Rice. Here, visitors of all ages can not only experience farm life but also savor local flavors, making it a perfect short getaway for a weekend immersion in rural life.
