Comparison Chart of Seven Types of Field Mosquito Repellent Liquids and Gear
When the weather warms up, outdoor enthusiasts often suffer from mosquito harassment, especially at night when swarms of mosquitoes make it hard to sleep. After a night of bites, the situation can be unbearable, ruining your mood for enjoying the scenery. So how do you solve this? Let the editor offer some tips:
1. Eating garlic can effectively repel mosquitoes, as they dislike the scent human skin emits after consuming garlic. Placing a few garlic cloves indoors can also help keep mosquitoes away. The downside is the strong smell, which most women probably won’t appreciate.
2. Taking vitamin B orally — after being metabolized through the body’s physiological processes and excreted through sweat — produces a scent that mosquitoes dare not approach. The method is to take 1–2 tablets of vitamin B1 one hour before bedtime, but avoid long-term high-dose use.
3. Some people often get bitten by mosquitoes while those around them feel nothing. It turns out that the color of clothing plays a big role in attracting mosquitoes. Wearing dark blue or brown clothes increases the likelihood of mosquito bites. Therefore, light-colored clothing is recommended in summer.
4. Place two or three opened bottles of mentholated oil, wind oil, or similar products nearby. Mosquitoes will smell them and dare not come close. However, the effect is somewhat limited, and these products evaporate quickly.
5. Use perfumes with floral scents such as jasmine, mimosa, rose, or preferably night-blooming jasmine. Mosquitoes cannot tolerate the fragrance of these flowers and will avoid them.
6. Take several wide-mouth bottles, fill them with a small amount of concentrated sugar or beer, gently shake them to coat the inner walls with sugar or alcohol solution, and place them in areas with high mosquito activity. The mosquitoes will be attracted by the sweet smell, fly into the bottles, and get trapped or drowned.
7. Apply or spray mosquito repellents such as mosquito repellent lotion or cream. Some of these products can even provide effective protection for up to 8 hours. However, note that when used together with sunscreens, there may be a slight reduction in sun protection efficacy, so users should reapply sunscreen more frequently.
8. Use electronic mosquito-repelling wristbands: dragonflies are natural mosquito predators, and mosquitoes flee at the sound they make. These wristbands mimic the wing-beating sound of dragonflies to effectively repel mosquitoes, and can also imitate the wing sounds of male mosquitoes to drive away female (blood-sucking) mosquitoes. Effective range is 1 square meter.
9. Use mosquito-repelling candles or candle torches with wax. The container gets hot when the candle burns — do not touch it to avoid burns, and do not use it near flammable materials. Also, do not leave the candle unattended while it's burning.
10. Quick-dry clothing with mosquito and insect repellent effects: many brands offer this feature. To avoid any advertising implications, specific brands are omitted here. Most of these garments also offer UV protection, making them convenient as you don’t need to carry extra items. The downside is that frequent washing may reduce their repellent effectiveness over time.
