Creating “Taiwan’s Cheonggyecheon” – Hsinchu Moat Family Park Opens Today

Hsinchu Moat Family Park was officially opened on the 13th. The “Moat Redevelopment Project” began in February this year, covering the section between Zhongyang Road and Shijie Street. A total of NT$26 million was invested. Key works included introducing groundwater into the waterway, planting aquatic plants, adding wheelchair-accessible ramps, narrowing traffic lanes, repaving a 240-meter pedestrian path, and installing an open-air circular cultural stage. These additions bring more “water and greenery” as well as cultural vibrancy to the city, making it Taiwan’s most family-friendly and water-connected moat. Mayor Lin Chih-chien said that future plans involve letting the water flow into Dongda Drainage to create truly flowing water, similar to South Korea’s example, turning the moat into Hsinchu City’s “Cheonggyecheon.”

Hsinchu City’s moat was built during the Qing Dynasty. Its functions evolved from military defense and agricultural irrigation to becoming a discharge channel for domestic wastewater in modern times. With the municipal government’s renovation efforts, the once rigid and secluded waterway has been completely transformed. Citizens can now stroll or exercise along the banks, while those with mobility issues—or parents pushing strollers—can also enjoy a riverside walk. The stage area provides a space for cultural and arts groups to perform, offering residents a great weekend leisure spot.
