It's currently the rainy season, and many areas are experiencing frequent disasters such as floods, mudslides, and lightning strikes. This season also happens to be the peak period for travel. When you're on the road, it's crucial to have the right knowledge for avoiding danger and self-rescue.
How should you take the correct emergency measures and perform self-rescue in the face of sudden disasters? Here are some issues to keep in mind when engaging in outdoor activities during the rainy season.

Pre-trip preparation:

To avoid being caught off guard by unexpected situations outdoors, thorough pre-trip preparation is essential. First, you’ll need a pair of comfortable waterproof hiking shoes. In the southern rainy season, roads can be muddy, and hiking shoes not only protect your feet but also help you escape in emergencies. Additionally, carry a small bottle of white liquor, which can be used for disinfection in urgent situations. A roll of gauze and a few band-aids are also good to have on hand for unforeseen needs. It’s best to prepare a waterproof bag as well so you can store valuables like your phone, cash, and camera inside during rain to prevent damage from moisture.
Self-rescue equipment:

In the wild, sometimes seemingly insignificant small items can play a big role. For example, a whistle or a high-powered flashlight can be very useful in critical moments. During the day, you can use a whistle to call for help, and at night, a high-powered flashlight can attract the attention of rescuers.

Camping tips:

Camping is a common activity outdoors. However, avoid setting up camp in riverbeds, riverbanks, streamsides, or valley areas. During the rainy season, valleys in mountainous regions of the south are most prone to flash floods. Therefore, before pitching a tent, carefully assess the terrain, especially paying close attention to areas near rock walls, and try to avoid camping in concave spots.

Emergency measures for encountering severe thunderstorms:

1. If you encounter a severe thunderstorm while outdoors, turn off all communication devices such as your mobile phone, and try to move toward lower-lying areas. Avoid walking across open ground or staying under trees. Temporarily squat in the middle of the woods, keeping as much as 5 meters away from tree trunks.

2. Carry a lightweight, insulated raincoat. Umbrellas generally have metal handles and are not recommended for use in severe thunderstorms. Try not to wear any metal accessories, such as keys or jewelry.

3. If you are driving, keep the car windows closed and maintain a certain distance from the doors and windows. On a boat, take shelter under the deck in the cabin, staying away from metal objects. In open areas, place your hands on your knees, keep your legs together, and squat—do not lie on the ground. Avoid staying near water bodies or in low-lying areas to prevent landslides or mudslides.

4. If you suddenly encounter strong winds, seek shelter in nearby pavilions or tourist shops in scenic areas. In the mountains, run downhill if possible; protective forest stations or farmhouses below the halfway point can provide shelter. If you can’t run, take cover in a deep cave, but do not stand at the cave entrance. In the city, go to the nearest tall building, as they are usually equipped with lightning rods.
