With the sunny weather upon us, now is the perfect time for outdoor activities. But safety should always come first—never let an adventure turn into a risk!
1. Whether your body is healthy and strong
Hiking differs from typical sightseeing city tours, as it usually involves high-intensity, dense outdoor activities. So before you set out on a hiking trip, it’s essential to have a good understanding of your physical condition.
First and foremost, you need a healthy body. Second, you should be accustomed to prolonged physical activity. Also, the following groups should think twice before going hiking: those with chronic conditions such as high blood pressure or heart disease; people who suffer severely from altitude sickness; and individuals under 18 or over 50 years old.
2. Bring enough common medications and master hiking-related knowledge
Due to the uniqueness and risks of outdoor travel, having some knowledge of wilderness survival is very important. For example, how to properly treat a tick bite; how to relieve altitude sickness; how to navigate in the wild; how to find clean water when you can’t carry your own; and how to choose a safer campsite.
3. Pay attention to the weather and understand your destination
In addition to general outdoor knowledge, understanding your travel destination is also key during a hiking trip. It’s best to prepare relevant destination information in advance and check the weather conditions. Familiarize yourself with the terrain of the area you’ll be exploring, choose suitable hiking routes, and avoid dangerous sections.
Generally speaking, the best time to set out is early in the morning, returning by evening. The risk of accidents increases at night, and if you get trapped, rescue efforts can be much more difficult.
4. Prepare outdoor gear in advance
Unlike regular travel, outdoor clothing and gear involve a lot more know-how. Typically, outdoor clothes need to be waterproof, sunproof, and windproof. In addition to everyday jackets and pants, outdoor gear may also include specialized items such as goggles, hydration bladders, snow gaiters, and sun-protective neck covers.
Different destinations require different tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, etc. For instance, when trekking in cold, high-altitude areas, choosing the wrong waterproof shoes could lead to frostbite on your feet and disrupt your entire journey.
5. The qualifications of your outdoor guide affect travel safety
Nowadays, more and more people are organizing outdoor activities like camping, hiking, and exploration via the internet and then proceeding on an AA basis. Many “hiking trips” are spontaneously organized by fellow hikers, which tend to be rather casual and lack professionalism. Some outdoor leaders are just organizers, and few actually hold official “outdoor guide certification.”
Outdoor sports are high-risk activities that require standardized management. When choosing teammates, consider whether they have hiking experience and a spirit of teamwork. Additionally, it’s recommended to hire a local guide for certain dangerous and sparsely populated sections to ensure your safety.
6. Safety rules: Be prepared and don’t overreach
Activities like mountaineering, rock climbing, and wilderness survival training offer unmatched benefits in building endurance and teamwork skills—but only if approached with a scientific attitude. Know your limits, avoid blindly seeking thrills or showing off, and never compare yourself to others. Choose your destination based on your actual capabilities.
During your adventure, if unexpected situations arise, assess your abilities realistically. If you sense danger, retreat promptly (and I’m not just talking nonsense).
