Hiking is a widely loved outdoor activity that not only helps to relax the mind but also strengthens the body. Even in the icy and snowy winter, the enthusiasm of hiking enthusiasts remains undiminished.
Chen Hui is a hiking enthusiast. Since falling in love with the sport three years ago, he has gone hiking almost every month. His footsteps have taken him to places such as Manas Lake, Phoenix Lake, Birch Valley, Tianshan Grand Canyon, Nanshan Pasture, Dadonggou, Jimusaer Xindi Township Huagegou, and Flying Snow Gorge.
"Hiking through journeys allows you to see landscapes others can't and also helps temper your willpower. Although winter hiking presents certain difficulties and challenges, there are still many fellow hikers like me who enjoy heading out in the winter," said Chen Hui.
Compared to other seasons, winter hiking is more significantly affected by natural conditions and may involve more potential challenges. Therefore, extra attention must be paid to travel safety. So, what should one keep in mind when hiking in winter?
First, before embarking on a long trek, it's best to engage in physical training and acclimatization exercises in advance to build endurance and ensure your body can handle the challenges of the journey. Participating in activities like rock climbing or diving can also help improve mental resilience.
Before setting off, you should accurately understand the weather conditions at your destination and clearly plan your detailed route down to the smallest detail. In addition, for hikers, it’s crucial to anticipate cold conditions and prepare accordingly. Bring high-quality thermal clothing made of pure wool, and make sure to always have at least one set of dry clothes and a pair of dry socks on hand. While walking, take care to prevent frostbite, especially protecting areas like your hands and feet that are constantly exposed, and avoid prolonged contact with ice and snow. Also, it’s advisable to wash your feet with warm water after each day’s hike to relieve fatigue and keep warm.
Hiking requires carrying gear over long distances, so the principle is to travel light. When it comes to food, a scientifically balanced nutritional intake is even more important, and in winter, sufficient calorie supply is essential. High-energy foods such as chocolate and beef jerky can provide quick energy and are also effective for keeping warm. Fruit candies can also supply some energy. For hydration, fruit drink mixes can help maintain electrolyte balance, and vitamin effervescent tablets or multivitamin tablets dissolved in water are also good options.
Although winter hiking can lift your spirits and strengthen your willpower, hikers should still pay extra attention to safety and make thorough preparations before setting out.
