Hiking is a widely loved outdoor activity that not only helps relax the mind but also strengthens the body. Despite the ice and snow in winter, the enthusiasm of hiking enthusiasts remains undeterred.

Chen Hui is a hiking enthusiast. Since falling in love with the sport three years ago, he has gone hiking almost every month. His footsteps have taken him to places such as Manahta West River Phoenix Lake, Birch Gully, Tianshan Grand Canyon, Nanshan Pasture, Dadonggou, Jimusaer Xindi Township Huage Gully, and Feixue Gorge, among others.

“Hiking through various landscapes allows you to see sights others can’t and also helps build your willpower. Although winter hiking comes with certain difficulties and challenges, there are still many fellow hikers like me who really enjoy heading out in the winter,” said Chen Hui.

Compared to other seasons, winter hiking is more affected by nature and presents more potential challenges. Safety during the trip deserves extra attention. So, what should one pay attention to when going hiking in winter?

First, before embarking on a long trek, it’s best to undergo physical training and acclimatization in advance to enhance endurance and ensure your body is up to the challenges of the journey. You can also participate in activities like rock climbing or diving to improve psychological resilience.

Before setting off, you should accurately grasp the weather conditions of your destination and clearly plan your detailed hiking route with meticulous attention. Additionally, for hikers, it is crucial to anticipate and prepare for cold conditions. Bring high-quality thermal woolen garments with good insulation, and make sure to carry at least one set of dry clothes and a pair of dry socks at all times. During the hike, take care to prevent frostbite, especially protecting extremities like hands and feet that are exposed for long periods—avoid prolonged contact with ice and snow. Also, it’s advisable to wash your feet with warm water after each day’s walk to relieve fatigue and keep warm.

Hiking requires carrying gear over long distances, so the principle is to pack light. In terms of food, a scientifically balanced and nutritious selection is more important—especially in winter, sufficient caloric intake is essential. High-energy foods like chocolate and beef jerky can provide quick energy boosts and help with warmth retention. Fruit candies can also supply a certain amount of energy. For hydration, fruit drink mixes can help maintain electrolyte balance, and vitamin effervescent tablets or multivitamin powders dissolved in water are also great options.

Although winter hiking brings joy and helps strengthen the will, hikers should still pay extra attention to safety and prepare well before setting out.
