Going on an exciting hiking and trekking trip, the time spent setting up camp and resting each night is when everyone relaxes the most. But many people don’t realize that some techniques are also important during camping.
Overall, there are 7 good habits you should develop while camping:
1. When setting up a tent, if the wind isn’t strong, just use tent stakes and skip the guy lines, as ropes can easily trip others. If the wind is really strong, then when using guy lines, make sure to keep a safe distance from other tents.
2. Align your tent door in the same direction as your neighbors’. In case of danger at night, this avoids bumping into each other and increases your chances of escaping.
3. Before sleeping, put your belongings in your bag, and place the bag inside the tent—especially food. This way, you won’t lose things when you wake up, and properly stored food won’t attract animals. If food isn’t stored properly and is just left in the tent, it can easily attract animals that may chew on the tent.
4. Keep your headlamp in a fixed spot, ideally one you can find even without looking. This habit is very useful in case of unexpected situations at night.
5. Keep your knife and headlamp in roughly the same location. This helps protect both your teammates and yourself.
6. Wrap your shoes in a plastic bag and place them in the tent, right where your feet will be when sleeping.
7. After setting up the tent, whether you’re in it or not, always make sure the tent zipper is fully closed.
