10 Fun Things to Do on a Family Camping Trip

After going through five camping trips, the fifth one was probably the most fulfilling, because you can do so much in three days and two nights~ Many people have asked me, what do kids actually do while camping? There’s photo evidence—let’s look at the pictures.

Being someone who likes ranking things, I’ve ranked these ten activities by difficulty, starting with the hardest to pull off~ (To be honest, the ranking doesn’t really matter; it depends on the local terrain as to what you can do.) But I just love ranking things, so bear with me~

It ranks tenth because you need a river to do it~ After all, this isn’t something you can achieve just by bringing equipment, so... it’s the hardest. On my fifth trip, I only encountered one place where it was possible~ There are lots of fun things to do by the river, like fishing!

Also, I can type four exclamation marks~~~ Diego hasn’t learned how to do it yet...

This is ranked ninth because it’s a bit more complicated—you need to make a fire, have wood, and bring chicken~~~ But it’s super rustic and fun~~~ Highly recommended!! Marshmallows are delicious!! Both adults and kids love them~

Playing baseball may seem simple—don’t you just need a ball and a bat? No~~~ It’s not that simple!! You also need a “sufficiently large” space, whether it’s woods or grassland, but it has to be big enough~ After all, if you hit the ball and it flies down the valley, it’s not coming back... Otherwise, you’ll just be practicing passing the ball, and the bat won’t get much use.

A frisbee is also an easy sport item to bring, and we got one too!! But like the others, it needs a fairly large area, so it doesn’t keep hitting other tents or flying into the valley. This photo is pretty cool—can you see where the frisbee is?

Playing badminton is a bit easier than the previous two sports, as long as you have the equipment, and you don’t need a huge area. We just bought a badminton set for 1,000 yuan (with some change left), available at Decathlon.

I think it’s the easiest of all ball sports—just need a basketball hoop and a basketball, and you can even play it alone. It requires the least space among ball sports. As for basketball hoops, many places sell them, but they take up a bit of room~~ It’s best to find an awesome camping buddy!! (Luckily, we already have one)

What a great activity to strengthen the bond between father and daughter!

This challenges the parents’ creativity!! Based on the local terrain, find something the kids might be interested in, to keep them busy~ If there are flowers, pick flowers; if there are leaves, pick leaves. Like this time we went to Meishu Campsite, there were piles of fruit on the ground. We slowly picked them using mineral water buckets and spent a whole hour doing it~ In the end, these buckets turned into little girls’ pretend loot for “stone bus shopping”! Don’t you think kids have boundless creativity too!

Even small bits of creativity can bring big satisfaction to children—who says you need to buy big toys?! Touching the land with your hands is the best multisensory experience!!

Oh—and picking up rocks is also a lot of fun!! Our Dora picks up rocks everywhere she goes. Last time we went to Green Island, she even brought back 10 rocks to Taipei.... I was floored~

Recently, I’ve seen lots of camping travel blogs featuring this. It’s not hard to do—just need a projector and a screen~ And when you’re camping outdoors, it’s naturally dark at night, so you can’t do much. The best thing is to watch a movie and eat snacks.... Awesome!!

Super easy to do, right?! Just need a table, chairs, a few sheets of drawing paper, and colored pens—done!! Nothing pretentious~ While the boys are playing ball, the girls will love this quiet activity, like drawing pictures of their brothers playing ball.

Super simple and romantic—lighting sparklers and setting off small fireworks. In the wild under the moonlight, this is the most romantic thing to do~~~ And somehow, watching it makes me feel really touched!

In the end, they were really happy~ You can tell from their smiles, they were genuinely happy!! Because these are all things I used to do with them when they were little, and they still remember it~~~~
