Every time I visited my maternal grandmother in Beigang, I always wanted to spend more time with her, so I often chose to stay at home with her. Since last March, with my now 84-year-old grandmother, who is still in good spirits and has even gained some weight despite not being as agile as before, this southern holiday not only included a DIY chocolate workshop experience with my friend Xiao Weige, but also a spontaneous trip the next day—thanks to a quick Google search—to arrange a visit to the Cat-Themed Dingxi Colorful Village for the kids.

![[Family Travel] Yunlin’s Huwei: A Leisurely Stroll through the Painted Cat-Themed Roof Village](/travel/pic/20180526/d6900a863457653554aeb39a7c8ae96b.jpg)
Located in Dingxi Community, Huwei, Yunlin, this cat-themed village was created by students from Yunlin Huwei University of Science and Technology. With cats as the main theme and infused with childlike fun, they developed a unique community style. “The Cats on the Roof” have breathed new life into this old neighborhood, adding plenty of adorable elements.
There’s a shop here called “Quan Rifuy,” which houses a super popular cat postman that’s always in high demand. It was even said that tourists touched the green uniform so much it faded.
On the way back, we coincidentally ran into the postman himself, making for a really cute comparison.
Avoiding the holiday crowds, even though the painted area isn’t huge, every step offers cat lovers an adorable encounter you shouldn’t miss!! The color palette is incredibly rich, and each cat is rendered with striking lifelike expressions.

When you come here, aside from the red brick walls, you might find traces of cute little cats on trees, utility poles, or even on some tin-roofed sheds. As you stroll along the paths in the neighborhood, you can’t help but admire the vivid artwork—from angelic cats playing instruments to cats taking shelter from the rain, and even many 3D-style depictions of felines. If you look closely, you’ll notice cute cat paw prints at the feet of each painting. Standing on the prints lets you capture the perfect panoramic shot of the artwork. Even the utility poles feature playful scenes of cats chasing butterflies.
There's also a clever design using a low wall and a small flower bed, creating a 3D image of a yellow tabby cat lying down.

Haven’t seen you in a while, Mom~ Your upbeat and optimistic personality makes you so easygoing too. Ha.
The angelic cat playing an instrument joyfully performs a symphony, its solitary figure resembling a city loner.
This foreign town scene gives off a relaxing sense of happiness. The artist used the steps beneath the brick wall and added a painted 3D wooden bench, almost making you feel like you’re truly there.
Grumpy Mini Treasure thinks: “Mom, can you take the picture faster?! How much longer do I have to act here?!” Mom tried to get the best angle and take a few more shots, but the result was a bunch of grumpy-face pictures.
This one is incredibly realistic—it almost makes you want to step into the painting. There’s also a cat house park made of wooden planks, offering a rest spot for travelers. But it wasn’t until we got home and saw the photos that we spotted the “highlight”—Xiao Weige, you’re not supposed to ride the kitty like that!! (Bad example, don’t follow!)
Visiting on a weekday helps avoid the crowds of people who come specifically to take photos during holidays. In the quiet, rustic alleys, you can act and shoot however you like. Originally, we tried teaching Mini Treasure to pose in a similar cat stance to play hide-and-seek, but we were also worried about crushing the cookies in our hands, which led to this scene of sticking to the pole… and holding the pose for so long that the twins ended up looking like canned cat food lunches to the cats!! The wooden chair depicts a big-mouthed cat eating fish bones, and there are many wooden cat sculptures on the painted wall in the park—an extremely popular photo spot for visitors. Whether you're crouching by a sleeping cat or sitting on a chair sipping coffee with the felines.
Through the 3D paintings and the lens, everything looks incredibly lifelike. The scenes of children and cats blend harmoniously. Both kids were drawn to the cats, sitting on the ground snacking. There are also “black cats” everywhere you look here, as if you’re on a treasure hunt, with surprises around every corner. If you have the chance to visit Yunlin, don’t miss out on this ultra-instagrammable cat village. Step into the 3D painting world, let your imagination run wild, and join in the fun.
