Yunlin Erjie is actually a very rural place. Discovering the wonderful Erjie Story House is really thanks to Liangba’s quirky habit, because he loves driving around country roads, which is how he found this hidden gem of a family-friendly travel spot.

The building, preserved from the Japanese colonial era, is truly a feast for the memory. And reading picture books and listening to stories here has a really special vibe. The story house isn’t big, but it’s small yet complete.
There are picture books suitable for different age groups, so parents can feel at ease bringing the whole family here to read and pass the time.
Besides picture books, there are also traditional story boxes here, where professional teachers use them to tell stories.
The day we visited happened to be kids’ storytelling time, and Liangliang listened very attentively as the young storyteller read.
There are also some art and culture event flyers available to take. The story house also holds various events from time to time. Aside from some that require material fees, most are free. Liangma highly recommends parents bring their kids here to listen to stories and participate in activities.

The teacher at the story house suggested that Liangma could start bringing Liangliang to these events, so we immediately signed up for the “Ferryman Art Space: Picture. Talking Pictures” activity. The teacher talked a lot about the ecology of Malaysia, and the kids all listened very attentively.
This time it was stamp painting—we were in a group of three, cutting out different shapes and then stamping them together. I never thought 1.8-year-old Liangliang could also do stamp painting. She held the tools quite properly herself and didn’t even want to give them back to the teacher at one point.
Ta-da!Liangliang’s first stamp painting. Although the little one wasn’t too impressed with her own work, mom was super proud.
Postscript:
Because the little one’s attention span is still quite limited, we had always been hesitant to bring her to such activities. But after visiting the Erjie Story House recently and chatting with the teachers there, they told me that at Liangliang’s current age of 1.8 years, 1.8 × 1.5 equals an attention span of just 2.7 minutes, so it’s normal for her to not sit still and wander around. They also encouraged me to start bringing her to activities now, letting kids learn through play and play through learning.

To be honest, Liangliang’s performance that day really exceeded mom’s expectations—she didn’t keep wandering around. Although she couldn’t focus on what the teacher was saying, giving her a pen kept her sitting nicely. As for mom, I was on edge the whole time, and my brain cells were totally fried by the end of the activity.
