Children these days rarely have the chance to connect with nature, making “camping” one of the hottest options for family trips. But is it suitable for toddlers? What should first-timers pay attention to? What gear is needed? Don’t worry—this guide has got you covered!

Since babies under 1 year old generally can’t walk yet and require special prepared baby food, it’s more convenient to wait until they’re at least 1 year old before going camping. Of course, there are cases where families camp with their 3-month-olds, but the inconveniences and risks increase significantly. Parents with little or no camping experience are advised to carefully assess the situation.

1. Tent and groundsheet (mat): Consider factors such as windproof and waterproof ratings, water-repellent features, as well as moisture-proof mats for inside and outside the tent.
2. Sleeping bag: For your first camping trip, it’s recommended to use a sleeping bag. If you’re aiming for more comfortable sleep, you can opt for an inflatable sleeping mat.
3. Pillow: A pillow that fits your child’s head shape can help ease the discomfort of sleeping outdoors.
4. Flashlight, camping lamp, lighting equipment, lighter, batteries.
5. Cooking tent.
6. Folding table and chairs.
7. Cooking utensils – pots, knives, tableware, portable gas stove (suitable for flat terrain), cleaning supplies.
8. Food and seasonings.
9. Portable refrigerator.
10. Change of clothes: Outdoor weather can be unpredictable, so it’s safer to dress in layers like an onion, and bring an extra set of clothes in case you need to change unexpectedly.
11. Lightweight slippers, bath towels, hand towels, hair dryer.
12. Baby diapers, formula, bottles, anti-kick blankets, baby food preparation tools, and utensils.
13. Mosquito repellent, electric mosquito swatter, personal medications, and essential first-aid supplies.
14. Toys that both parents and children can play with together.

For those bringing along a baby or going camping for the first time, choosing a man-made campsite is much easier than a natural one. You could also invite experienced friends to join you or sign up for a well-reviewed group camping trip to ensure mutual support. Try to rent larger equipment when possible to avoid ending up with items you don’t like or find impractical.
