We’re exploring a sightseeing spot in Tainan and have finally made it to the renowned Xilong Cultural Park. A relaxed afternoon is ideal for a visit—outdoors, there are big slides and swings, plus a children’s play area and a library too. It’s such a well-planned park, and I really wish Kaohsiung had something similar where kids can run and play freely.

The site of Xilong Cultural Park was originally the Jiali Sugar Refinery, formerly known as “Xilong Sugar Factory.” Established in 1906 and beginning sugar production in 1909, it was the first modern sugar factory set up by the Meiji Sugar Company in Taiwan. Sugar production continued until the late stages of World War II, when it was forced to halt due to Allied air raids.

There weren’t many visitors today, making the entire park feel especially peaceful. We wandered around, taking in the art details in every corner. It’s a perfect spot for an afternoon walk with the kids. It’s also great for a picnic—just bring some food and drinks, and you can sit and enjoy them. The park features lots of plants and is kept very clean throughout. I love such tranquil afternoons, admiring the plants climbing up the red bricks—it gives a sense of climbing attachment. Even more, I love the reflections here, interwoven in complex patterns, as if a symphony is playing softly in my ears.

The government should build more thoughtful facilities like this—then people might be more willing to have more children. As we walked along, we came upon the children’s playroom. Turns out the reason the park felt so empty was because everyone was here hanging out with their kids.

There are climbing walls, slides, and a few large pieces of equipment—that’s all it takes to keep the kids happy. (The park also has a children’s library, but the little ones were too hungry from playing in the playroom to make it to the library.)
