The Taiwan Lantern Festival is the largest festive event in the country, and this year it’s being held in Taoyuan. As a local resident, I just had to join in on the fun.

However, whether you’re bringing along little kids or elderly family members to explore the lantern displays, it’s definitely not an easy task. Especially since this year’s event covers a massive 32 hectares — if you want to squeeze in to see the record-breaking 26-meter-tall main lantern, you’ll need to set aside plenty of time and energy. While walking through the lantern zones, I saw several kids complaining about being tired and asking to rest, or begging to be carried after just a few steps. As a mom, I already knew this would happen, which is why I didn’t bring my son along on the first day.

The lanterns are naturally more beautiful and impressive at night, but in order to share some detailed insights with everyone planning to attend, I decided to scout the area during the day. For those who want to see the illuminated lanterns, I recommend going in person or checking out other articles.

So, as long as you read this article carefully, even if it doesn’t meet 100% of your needs, you’ll still get over 90% of the essential information — helping you save time and enjoy the stunning themed lanterns without a hitch.

Before heading to the venue, it’s best to familiarize yourself with the layout map, or download it from the official event website and save it on your phone just in case.

Due to the large-scale traffic control in the area, nearby residents and high-speed rail passengers have experienced some inconvenience. In response, the Taoyuan Mayor has coordinated with relevant departments to make improvements, and the latest updates have been posted on the official website. That’s why I decided not to drive — my husband dropped me off, and I took a taxi back.

The advantage of taking public transport is that you don’t have to worry about parking. However, it’s definitely less convenient when traveling with kids or elderly family members. I’ll share more parking info later. This time, I got off at Linghang South Road and planned to walk from the Multicultural Exchange Lantern Zone all the way to the main lantern, then take a taxi home from the high-speed rail station near the main lantern.

The “Multicultural Exchange Lantern Zone” features baseball — currently the hottest theme — showcasing joint performances by outlying islands and international sister cities. The “New Peach Blossom Land Lantern Zone,” located in Qingtang Park, represents Taoyuan’s pond culture, and the nighttime water theater performance there is absolutely stunning (must-see!). (Performance times: February 21 – March 6, with shows at 7:10pm, 8:10pm, and 9:10pm each evening)

The frog designs on the ponds are adorable and endearing — I’m sure they’ll look completely different under the night lights.

The famous lotus flowers in Guanyin, Taoyuan, are one of the must-visit spots for tourists.

From afar, the lanterns look incredibly lifelike, and up close, the details are even more striking.

The water theater performs right on the giant lotus leaves, becoming the highlight of this zone.

The “New Taoyuan Agri-Lantern Zone” is themed around agriculture, showcasing the unique agricultural characteristics of Taoyuan.

Visiting the “Kinmen Lantern Zone” gives you the feeling of being instantly transported to Kinmen. Having traveled there before, I still vividly remember every detail. This zone highlights Kinmen’s Kaoliang liquor, the Wind Lion God statues, and the Juguang Tower, offering visitors a taste of Kinmen’s military history and cultural heritage.

The “Indigenous Peoples Lantern Zone” features rich symbolic totems, a water curtain theater, tribal lounges, and stages...etc., fully displaying the unique elements of the 16 indigenous tribes. It’s also beautifully illuminated at night.

Almost every major lantern zone has a food area, with many vendors setting up shop, and some businesses already open during the trial run period.

The “Matsu Lantern Zone” is most notable for its Beihai Tunnel, which you can actually walk through. Outdoors, there’s also the Blue Tears phenomenon — not very visible during the day, but absolutely magical at night.

The “Taoyuan Story Axis” marks the beginning of yet another themed area.

The organizers have thoughtfully set up nursing rooms, but after walking so far, I only spotted one sign... It’s located closer to the main lantern. Moms who need to use them, please judge for yourselves.

Various scenic spots are linked together to tell the history and culture of Taoyuan.

The famous Daxi Bridge.

The only nursing room at the venue offers good privacy and looks clean and comfortable. But moms who breastfeed outdoors know the drill — it’s better to bring your own nursing cover.

There are plenty of portable toilets here, and some areas even have LED scrolling signs to help guide people in the dark to find the restrooms easily.

Finally spotted the lantern from Taoyuan District Office.

Pass through this floral display, and you’ll find the “Fairytale Dream Factory Lantern Zone” — the most anticipated and beloved area for kids.

Dreamy Destiny is a secondary lantern at the venue. Fairy tales have accompanied many people as they grew up. With the concept inspired by pastry candy treehouses and castles, the big tree is adorned with colorful candies, cakes, and chocolates, coming together in vibrant hues to form a dreamy treehouse — giving everyone their own “fairytale dream.”

Taoyuan is home to many corporate-run famous tourist factories, attracting numerous visitors each year. The Fairytale Dream Factory Lantern Zone showcases representative imagery from various companies (tourist factories).

Take this kindergarten, for example — almost every local in Taoyuan knows it, and even if you don’t, you’ve probably seen this iconic deer.

The giant inflatable Power Ranger is just diagonally opposite the fairy tale area, making it very convenient to grab a bite with kids.

This year’s lantern festival not only features “nursing rooms,” but also first aid stations and rental services for wheelchairs and strollers. In other words, those who need these services can only enter from the main lantern area.

The “Technology World Lantern Area” infuses innovative tech elements into the Lantern Festival. It’s not just about lights—there are also lasers and TV walls, making it a really dazzling section.

Another highlight that’s been generating buzz is the “Universe Tower,” crafted by a hundred artisans using 4,000 square meters of space and 10,000 pieces of glass to create a crystal glass structure. It’s said to be stunning at night, and it’s right next to the main lantern—don’t miss it.

Another mission this time was to find the artwork created by the kindergarten teacher of Prince Ming, and I actually managed to locate it.

All the lanterns displayed near the main lantern were made by schools at various levels—there are so many it’s overwhelming, and it would take at least an hour to look at them all carefully.

One particularly amusing lantern features Spider-Man, which excited kids rushed up to. It has a very creative theme.

The main lantern, “Great Sage Brings Prosperity,” is themed around the well-known Monkey King. Standing 26 meters tall, it holds a golden cudgel in the left hand and supports a peach in the right, appearing in the form of the Great Sage. It also rotates at intervals, delivering an impressive light show.

Finally, there’s the “Religious Blessing Lantern Area,” which also attracts the largest number of elders. It gathers traditional folk beliefs, praying for favorable weather and a bountiful harvest in the Year of the Monkey. The chibi-style Guan Yu is absolutely adorable.
