Whether on a long-haul or short-haul flight, passengers all hope to have a comfortable journey, even in economy class. You can still make yourself feel as comfortable as in business class. We’ve compiled a list of essential comfort items for flying that you can pack in your carry-on — all recommended by frequent flyers and travel bloggers online. These items don’t weigh much but can make your time on the plane much more pleasant.

Airplanes usually keep the air conditioning on, so if you’re sensitive to the cold, it’s a good idea to bring an extra jacket in your carry-on in case there aren’t enough blankets or the air conditioning is too strong. Also, with more and more people opting for budget airlines, don’t forget that blankets on low-cost carriers often come at an additional cost!

On some long-haul flights that involve overnight travel, toothpaste and a toothbrush are essential for keeping your breath fresh. Some find it easier to sleep after brushing their teeth. Packing a travel-sized toothbrush set in your carry-on will help ensure fresh breath.

Bonus items:For longer flights, bring some facial cleanser to avoid feeling greasy.

Bringing a plastic bottle or thermos in your hand luggage is a must. Although you can’t carry liquids through security, don’t throw away empty bottles — there are usually water fountains near the boarding gate where you can refill them.

Travelers flying to Thailand, Japan, and Korea, where the flights are relatively short, often choose budget airlines. Whether it’s because the seats on budget airlines are thinner or you’re on a long-haul flight to North America, having a neck pillow like this can make the flight much more comfortable. Next time, tuck one into your carry-on. There are now also many cute designs available that you might just want to buy — they’re great for taking naps during office lunch breaks too!

If you wear shoes for over ten hours straight, whether on the ground or at high altitude, it can get quite uncomfortable. It’s recommended to bring your own socks or slip-on shoes to keep your feet dry and comfortable.

Masks are a definite must-have for your carry-on. They’re useful for staying warm and also for sleeping. Why for sleeping? Because when you’re fast asleep, you lose control — if you end up sleeping with your mouth wide open, everyone will see. Just wear a mask to avoid any embarrassing moments!

Some people prefer to rest well on a flight and don’t like harsh lighting, or when taking a red-eye flight, they want to sleep properly. In these cases, an eye mask can help block out light. If you don’t have an eye mask, sunglasses can help shield you from cabin lights or sunlight and let you sleep comfortably.

If you’re flying with a regular airline, each seat usually has a screen for watching movies, listening to music, or playing games. But on budget airlines, you’ll need to bring your own. Prepare by converting your music and videos into “offline mode” at home, then you can pull them out from your carry-on during the flight to binge-watch shows or listen to music. And don’t forget your headphones — and make sure they’re fully charged.

Remember, liquid toiletries must not exceed 100ml, or they won’t be allowed on the plane.

If you’re menstruating or traveling with a baby, hygiene products are absolutely essential during the flight — which isn’t too short or too long. Although airplane toilets may sometimes provide sanitary pads, it’s more comfortable to use your own trusted products.

Don’t forget to pack hygiene products in your carry-on. Don’t make the same mistake I once did — I remembered to put them in my checked luggage but forgot to bring them in my carry-on. So embarrassing!

Finally, a reminder: all liquid items must not exceed 100ml and should be packed in a transparent resealable bag (20x20cm), with the total volume not exceeding 1000ml. All the items mentioned above are chosen to be simple and lightweight, so you can travel with ease and enjoy your trip more.
