The world’s deepest mailbox is in Taiwan – go diving to the seabed to take a photo and send a postcard!

Green Island welcomes a new check-in landmark – the “Pygmy Seahorse Seabed Mailbox,” the world’s deepest seabed mailbox and the second of its kind in Taiwan. Chunghwa Post has partnered with Taitung County Government for the first time to install a 11-meter-deep seabed mailbox in the Shilang snorkeling area of Green Island. All you need to do is buy a waterproof postcard designed for underwater use, drop it into the mailbox, and a dedicated underwater mail carrier will help send it.

The design of the seabed mailbox is inspired by the “pygmy seahorse,” a little sea creature found in the waters around Green Island. Standing about 1.8 meters tall and primarily white in color, it’s made from stainless steel that won’t harm the marine environment. More than just a mailbox, it also doubles as a trash bin, aiming to help bring underwater litter back to shore.

In the future, a large net bag will be installed beneath the Pygmy Seahorse mailbox. It is hoped that visitors dropping off postcards will also pick up any nearby trash and place it in the bag. When the mail carrier comes to collect the letters, they will also take the trash bag back to shore.

Green Island is a paradise for divers worldwide, boasting rich marine ecosystems, crystal-clear and highly visible waters. It has also been ranked among the world’s top 100 dive sites. By incorporating the artistic concept of a seabed mailbox, it hopes to inspire global interest in exploring the ocean.
